Organizing items with folders

All shapes and markers in PopEx must live inside folders - nothing can float at the root level.

Creating and managing folders

• Create new folder: Use the left drawer to add a new folder. Items can only be created or imported inside an existing folder.

• Folder color: Applies to all child items by default; shapes can override with their own color.

• Transparency slider: Adjusts visibility of all items in the folder.

• Show/hide: Eye icon toggles visibility of child items.

Transferring items between folders

Use the Copy or Move actions on a shape or marker:

• Copy: Duplicates the item into another folder. After copying, edits diverge independently.

• Move: Relocates the item fully to another folder.

Bulk actions on folders

• Zoom to region: Snaps the map to the full extent of the folder.

• Export: Export all folder contents to Excel (unioned results + child tabs) or KML.

• Delete: Deleting a folder removes all contained items after confirmation.

Exporting items from folders

• Excel export: Produces two outputs:

  • Unioned folder tab with dissolved results

  • Individual child shapes on their own tabs

• KML/KMZ export: Exports the original parts only, not the dissolved union.

Population calculation at the folder level

PopEx treats folders as aggregation units. If child polygons do not overlap, results are a simple sum. If they overlap, PopEx dissolves the overlaps and recomputes metrics over the merged geometry.

This ensures accurate totals and prevents double-counting population.
